Groundhog Day 2011: Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel

Groundhog Day is on Wednesday and you don’t have to turn on the news to find out just how close–or far away–spring is.

Enter: Malverne Mel.

That’s right. Long Island has it’s very own weather predicting groundhog and he lives in Malverne.

el is Long Island’s first furry prognosticator and he will return on Feb. 2 to give us the good news, or the bad news.

Will it be an early spring or six more weeks of winter?

Starting at 7 a.m. at the gazebo near the Malverne Train Station, there will be a flurry of activities for children and adults including music by the Banjo Rascals, balloons, a Malverne Mel poster contest, Party Marty and Lucky the Duck from Long Island’s own KJOY (98.3).

State and local government dignitaries will don their top hats while Mayor Patricia McDonald will encourage Mel to leave his cozy hutch and translate from “ground-hog-ese”, Mel’s weather forecast. And God, we hope it’s a good one. We also hope Mel can get out of the ground and through the three feet of snow to tell us.

Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be served at the Malverne Historical House which is walking distance from Mel’s hutch.

Join your favorite team: “Team Early Spring” or “Team 6 More Weeks of Winter” at this fun-filled event and be sure to bring your camera and take photos with Mel’s people-sized buddy who will be frolicking through the snow.
