Wear Red Day 2011 seeks to act as a health and fitness call to action to women and men to join together and raise awareness for a deadly disease: heart disease. Cardiovascular disease takes the lives of thousands of people every day, and the American Heart Association wants you to do something about it. The call to action is not just about wearing red, it’s about education and saving lives each and every day. Wear Red Day 2011 and the American Heart Association is about education, awareness, better overall health and fitness and reducing the risk of heart disease. –

Wear Red Day 2011 is upon us, and for the American Heart Association, it’s a health and fitness call to action for women and men alike to help raise awareness about a disease that takes the life of one out of three women in the United States: heart disease.

The American Heart Association has garnered several sponsors in their call to action for Wear Red Day 2011. Some of the leading retailers in the US have joined forces with the American Heart Association in their call to action, and the purpose is simple: raise awareness about one of the most deadly diseases in the US.

Macy’s, Geoffrey Beene, Perfumania, Rite Aid, Yankee Candle, Campbell Soup Company and many others have joined with the American Heart Association in their call to action for the Wear Red Day 2011 campaign. Various events are planned throughout the day across the country for Wear Red Day 2011, and all monies raised go directly to helping fund research to cure heart disease, along with education programs, and funding ongoing education programs for doctors and health care professionals.

Forty percent of charity funds raised through Wear Red Day 2011 goes directly to public education. Another 23 percent is spent on research regarding women’s heart issues with 13 percent going for education for healthcare professionals.

According to the American Heart Association, more women die of heart disease than the next four causes combined, all of them cancer. It is estimated that 90 percent of all US women have one or more risk factors that contribute to heart disease, and 2,200 Americans succumb to some form of heart disease every day, equating to about one every 39 seconds.
