TxDOT prepares for hazardous roads

SAN ANTONIO -- If you weren't feeling the cold yet, you certainly are now. Freezing temperatures could make for hazardous driving conditions overnight Thursday or into Friday's morning commute.

Snow is expected in parts of the hill country between 10PM and 2AM. TxDot trucks are on standby all over the city, preparing to de-ice should the snow turn slick. Meanwhile, many drivers are preparing for the worst.

"If it snows, I won't come out. I'll stay at home," commented Sandra Hathaway, a San Antonio driver.

If the expected snow sticks to roads, many other drivers plan to do the same.

"I'd rather not drive," commented Lisa Steubing. "But we'll have to see what my work says about that."

The Texas Department of Transportation has activated its command post to monitor weather conditions overnight.

"There's a possibility that the snow could actually turn into ice," commented TxDOT spokesperson Laura Lopez. "So we want to make sure that we are monitoring the weather conditions, plus our bridges and overpasses."

Forecasters predict San Antonio could see, at the most, up to an inch of snow on the roads Friday morning. Chances are that by the commute, however, roads will just be wet. But even that could be dangerous. Wet roads on Tuesday morning caused a big rig wreck that backed up I-35.

"The worst case scenario possible would be that we close the highways down," commented Lopez. "But that's not our intention. Our intention is to keep the highways open and safe for the motorists."

Officials urge you to drive slowly, and take extra precaution on the road.

"You just have to keep your eyes open and try to be as safe as possible," commented driver Jacob Leibowitz.

The last time San Antonio saw snow on the roads was in February 2004. Stay tuned to News 4 WOAI Friday morning. We'll be monitoring the weather and road conditions to bring you the latest.
